 Alsace
is one of the smaller regions of France located
on the eastern edge of the country with borders
with Germany and Switzerland. The region is

|

 Champagne-Ardenne
is a region in the north-east of France which
borders Belgium. The Champagne-Ardenne region
is made up of four departments Aube, Ardennes,
Haute-Marne and Marne and the capital of the
region is Chalons-en-Champagne.
Champagne-Ardenne is famous for the production
of the sparkling white wine which is named
after the region - Champagne. Champagne wine
is produced by the addition of sugar at a
certain stage in the production process which
generates a second fermentation. Two men are
credited with the development of champagne,
Christopher Merret and the monk, Dom Perignon.
With certain exceptions, only sparkling wines
produced in the Champagne-Ardenne can be called
champagne.
Although the capital of the region is Chalons-en-Champagne
there are two larger towns in the region,
Reims and Troyes. Reims (or Rheims) is an
historically important city situated on the
right bank of the Vesle River. The city was
notable as the location of the coronations
of the kings of France and has much of historical
and architectural interest for the cultural
tourist including the cathedral and ancient
unspoilt medieval streets and squares.

 Lorraine
is a French administrative region in the far
northeast of the Country. The region is made
up of four Departments: Meurthe-et-Moselle,
Meuse, Moselle and Vosges and the capital
city of the region is Metz. Lorraine has borders
with three other countries: Luxembourg, Belgium
and Germany and in the past it has seen a
great deal of conlict due to its strategic
position on the crossroads between four differant
countries.
The two largest cities in the region of Lorraine
are Metz and Nancy. Hertz has car hire branches

region. Metz is notable for the yellow limestone,
called Pierre de Jaumont, which has been used

Nancy is just over twenty miles away and has

designers and craftsmen who specialised in
creating furniture and ornaments in the Art
Nouveau style. Their work contributed to Nancy
attaining the title of "Capitale de l'Est"
a reference to the fact that it rivalled Paris
as a high centre for innovative art and culture.
