 Burgundy
(French: Bourgogne) is a Province of France
with an eastern-central location in the country
which has earnt it the name "The Heart
of France". The region is made up of
four Departments - Yonne, Cote-d'Or, Nievre
and Saone-et-Loire. Hertz has car hire outlets
throughout Burgundy including those at the
region's capital, Dijon, and at the larger
towns of Chalon sur Saone, Nevers, Auxerre,
Macon and Beaune.
The region is world famous for its wine production
and the term "Burgundy" has now
fallen into common parlance to mean red wine.
Despite this, the region produces both red
and white wines with strict controls on the
types of grapes grown to produce the region's
quality product. Burgundy wines are some of
the most expensive in the world and are recogniseable
to experts by their "terroir" or
"flavour of the land". In some areas
such as Nievre this is represented by a smoky
or flinty taste.
For the traveller, Burgandy has much to offer.
There are many organised tours of the vineyards
with fascinating demonstrations of wine production,
wine-tasting and opportunities to sample the
local cuisine. The region also has much to
offer in terms of unspoilt countyside and
medieval towns with their historic interest.
The Morvan Regional Nature Park in the Nievre
Department is a huge area of mountains, lakes
and natural woodlands providing excellent
opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, water
sports and other outdoor activities.

in the far east of the country and has a long
eastern border with Switzerland. The region
is made up of the Departments of Doubs, Haute-Saône,
